Mika stepped out into the hallway of the Marine base, holding a mop in his right hand. He sighed and let his shoulders sag a little as he moved against the nearest wall to let a group of other soldiers pass. He was supposed to be on cleaning duty, but someone has stolen the cleaning supplies. Now he wasn't entirely sure what to do. But thankfully, it wasn't long before another Marine came down the hallway carrying a bucket of soapy water. He held it out to Mika and smirked, "Hey, friend, you forget somethin'?" The boy turned to the other Marine and offered a little bow, taking the bucket in his free hand, "Ah, thanks! I was looking for this." The other Marine just snickered and started walking again, passing the boy, "Yeah, just don't forget it again. Wouldn't want Petty Officer Guan to find out that you're slacking, eh?"
The boy hugged the mop to his chest and shook his head, mumbling a confirmation. He waited until the other Marine had gotten a bit further away before finally placing the bucket down and dipping the mop in the foaming liquid, pulling it back out to swab at the floor in wide arcs. Once the white tassels had turned black, heavy with dirt, he dipped it back in the water to wash it off and took a step forward, his foot landing on a section that he'd just cleaned... and to his surprise, he couldn't raise his foot. Mika put the mop back in the bucket and grabbed his leg with both hands, trying to pull it free. But no matter how hard he pulled, he was completely stuck. He tried to get his shoelaces off instead, but the knot was too tight for him to work his fingers between the laces. Since that didn't work, he wrapped his hands around his ankle and twisted his foot from side to side, trying to worm his way free. It wasn't long before his foot came out of the shoe... but much faster than expected, causing him to flip backwards and slam his head against the metal door behind him. The Marine wavered as his mind clouded over, only to collapse on the floor like a pile of bricks soon afterward.

Shaking hands run through my hair My fears, where do I go from here? Nike had just been minding his own business as usual, trying to lay low and out of the spotlight. His superiors were always breathing down his neck, mostly because of his appearance. He couldn’t help it, but that didn’t matter to the xenophobes he was always assigned to. They thought he was half human at least; he’d never tell them they were wrong either. Not only for his job, but safety as well, since Shadetails still had to watch out for Night Hunters on the prowl for their kind.
So here he was, just going about his usual business; which at the moment consisted of procrastinating on reporting to the xenophobes for more petty things to do since he’d finished his previously assigned task. This all went interrupted when he found a fellow officer unconscious on the floor. Giving the scene a quick survey, he noted the grunt was missing a shoe, which was perched on the floor, still perfectly tied. He didn’t see any blood, so he gave the air a quick sniff. Thankfully the hallway was empty save for himself and the knocked out grunt. Due to his heritage, he was able to catch a whiff of glue; and thankfully no whiff of blood either. Poor kid got hit by that prank, Nike thought with a sigh, remembering when he was still naïve enough to be tricked by that same thing.
Kneeling carefully to avoid the still somewhat tacky glue on the floor, Nike grabbed the shoe and began working to unstick it from the floor. After a minute or so of effort the shoe came free, albeit still rather sticky on the bottom of the sole. Untying it skillfully, he deftly got the shoe back on the foot of its owner before quickly retying the laces. Figuring the kid would just get more hazing if he stayed prone on the floor, Nike easily hefted him up.
Not knowing which of the barracks the grunt was assigned to, Nike carried him bridal style back to the one he had the pleasure of calling home while on duty. The barracks were empty when Nike arrived; another small blessing in his otherwise crappy life.
Gently, he set the kid on his bunk, once again finding a reason to be glad of a bottom bunk. With nothing better to do, the Shadetail plopped his rump on the floor and leaned against the bunks to wait for the kid to regain consciousness. | Notes: Nike's first post yay! It was the best day of Mikado's short life. He slowly strutted down the aisle, flanked by a legion of his fellow Marines on either side. At the front of the procession was a raised platform with a podium at it's center, the Fleet Admiral standing behind it and slightly off to the side, arms held behind his back with a barely contained look of pride crossing his features. The young Marine finally climbed up onto the platform, only to be greeted by a simple gesture from the Fleet Admiral, motioning towards the podium, "Well. Don't keep us waiting, son." Mikado smiled brightly in response and turned to face the crowd that had gathered for his award ceremony, eliciting the Marines to shift to attention, all offering a synchronized salute in his honor.
Although he'd never had the stomach for public speaking, this was his time. He felt more confident than ever. The young Marine gave a short speech, detailing his convictions as a member of the Marines, and turned back to the Fleet Admiral to receive his reward. The man lifted the medal... only to suddenly clench his hand, crushing the decoration to dust with minimal effort. Mikado's jaw dropped as he tried to stammer out a question, only for the Fleet Admiral to smirk and raise an arm towards the boy's face, "What were you expecting? You're a disgrace. I'm ashamed to wear the same uniform as you, brat." Before Mikado had time to respond, the Admiral flicked his forehead, sending him toppling over backward.
But as soon as his back met the wood underneath him, it vanished. Instead, he hit water. The platform was gone, as were the Marines and even the Fleet Admiral himself. Mikado slowly felt himself sinking in the inky blackness of the abyss which he'd been banished to, unable to work up the strength to do anything but float in the darkness, feeling the heaviness of the water around him slowly pushing him deeper into it's depths. But he wasn't alone. There was something else... something cruel. Something powerful. Something evil. It lurked just outside of his vision, but he knew it was there. He could feel it's presence. The boy opened his mouth, as if to speak, but only bubbles spilled out. It was hopeless...
It was then that Mikado returned to the world of the living. He jolted upright, only to slam his head against the bunk above him, limply falling back into place. Thankfully he hadn't lost consciousness this time, but he certainly was dazed enough to be reduced to issuing a pained groan.

Shaking hands run through my hair My fears, where do I go from here? A slight clicking sound reverberated through Nike’s ears as he yawned, the bones of his jaw popping slightly in protest at being stretched so far. He sat with his arms crossed over his chest, beginning to doze off slightly in the nearly silent barracks. It was rare to have any semblance of quiet with his sense of hearing, and his ears were still as well rather than twitching at every little sound. The creaking sound of a bed alerted him to movement nearby, followed by the rather painful sound of a skull coming into contact with a hard surface.
Kid must have finally woken up, he thought to himself, feeling somewhat groggy still. He turned his head to glance at the obviously pained grunt, his ears twitching at the kid’s groan of agony. It was a small wonder he hadn’t knocked himself clean out again. “Good to see you didn’t knock yourself out again,” Nike turned to look at the younger marine, an amused smirk on his face. His eyes still held the darker look he gave to his fellow marines, though much less intense. It was true the kid had been made a target as well, but that didn’t automatically mean he wasn’t above giving Nike the same treatment the rest of his ‘comrades’ were only so willing to dish out to him. If it weren’t for the fact finding another job was nearly impossible for him, Nike would have left the marines years ago. Instead he now found himself babysitting an injured grunt.
He supposed there were always worse jobs. | Notes: He's a jaded, cynical bastard lol Tags: Mikado SatoWords: 262 |

When the cobwebs faded from the boy's mind, he could finally focus enough to realize that someone was talking to him. It was strange though... this didn't feel like the metal ground of the base's hallways. But that's where he was, wasn't it? He placed a hand on his face to rub his forehead, letting out another groan as he assessed the damage, tracing his fingers over a slight bump on his head. "Nn... minor concussion." He wasn't exactly a medical professional, but he certainly remembered what a concussion felt like, and he definitely had one. Not particularly threatening though, so he chose to ignore it for now.
It was now that Mikado finally got a good look at his surroundings. No, this wasn't a hallway. It was the barracks. He swung his feet over the side of the bed so that he could sit upright and finally come face to face with his would-be savior. Mikado's eyes drifted to the other Marine's ears for a moment before he closed his eyes and smiled slightly, "Were you the one who moved me? Thank you..." It wasn't the first time he ended up passed out on the floor, and probably wouldn't be the last. So he knew from experience just how uncomfortable it was waking up from that situation, and was rather happy to have been spared it.
Although Mikado noted the other Marine's unusual race, it didn't bother him. Really, he barely addressed it at all. Many chose to discriminate against those who appeared 'different', but fortunately Mikado was not one of those people. He started to get up, but suddenly froze, a disappointed look crossing his face, "Oh... I never finished mopping the floor. How long was I asleep...?"
