The ship was simply drifting. The Vegapunk had nowhere important that she needed to be, no projects that needed to be completed any time soon, nothing that could be construed as "important". So she was out of the deck, having a smoke and reading. She thought she'd heard some warnings about pirates in the area over the Den Den Mushi, but she doubted she'd be attacked. She was effectively a floating Navarone, with less Marines. Just one woman and her pet psychopathic South Bird.
She closed her book for a moment and cast her eyes out to the sea. The sea; her home. There was no other place she'd rather be. There was no other place she could be. She had all of her robots, and all of her projects, here on this ship, and she had no one but her. Well, and Tatsu, but Tatsu didn't count. Being alone was very good for her mental health, she believed. LAIKA OF THQ

Shaking hands run through my hair My fears, where do I go from here? What was originally supposed to be a routine, albeit forced, relocation, had turned into utter disaster. After his last bout of hell from his superiors, they'd finally gotten him reassigned so they didn't have to bother with him anymore. Nike was rather annoyed by the whole thing, since it meant he had to pack up and move, again. He'd partially hoped they'd finally just kick him from the marines, but no such luck.
So he'd packed his things and loaded onto the marine transport that'd take him to the base he'd call home until he found decent off base housing. He'd stopped bothering to keep many belongings the last time he'd been forced to relocate like this. It also made things easier in the event of his inevitable firing, whenever the fates decided to throw that curveball at him.
The first half of the trip had been entirely uneventful. Since life always liked to kick Nike while he was down, the second half didn't turn out well. Once as far from land as the ship would get, pirates seemingly appeared out of thin air and attacked the transport ship, effectively sinking it and leaving Nike in his current predicament.
Alone and adrift, the shadetail had managed to claw his way onto a decent sized piece of flotsam. He was still soaked to the bone, and in the middle of the ocean miles from the nearest island; but at least he wasn't going to drown right away. Without food or fresh water, he'd likely die of dehydration before too long; if a sea king didn't get him first.
For now he remained draped on his small flotsam paradise, barely conscious and wounded from the pirate attack.

She saw the stranded sailor first, then Tatsu did. The vest was locked away down in her room, but that damn crazy bird knew more than one way to kill a man with only his talons. For a psychopath, he was creative. "Worst case, he's a pirate and we take him and get bounty money. Best case he's a Marine and we save his ass and get a commendation. If you lay one claw on him, your head will face north for a good long while." Gin stared up at the wheel, and the South Bird recognized the fire in her eyes. He gave his distinctive, echoing cry, and settled back into his job of navigating, taking the ship closer to the stranded sailor.
"Howdy there! Need some assistance?" Gin called out to the floating man, preparing a rope to throw out to him. From this distance, she could see he was not human. At first glance, she guessed Beastfolk. Some kind of canid, based on the ears. Whatever he was, he was about to die, and Gin was willing to sacrifice her precious aloneness to make sure another human being didn't die when she had the chance to save him. She was a Marine, after all; it was her duty to protect and serve. LAIKA OF THQ

Shaking hands run through my hair My fears, where do I go from here? By this point, Nike was sorely regretting wearing his civvies for the trip. The lack of a shirt was not doing anything to keep him warm, which was starting to become an issue with the mess of wet hair he was currently sporting. Thankfully he hadn't lost his knapsack during the attack, though it too was likely soaked.
His exhaustion addled mind kept going over random thoughts. Falling entirely unconscious wouldn't be a good course of action in this situation, but with the pseudo delirium kicking in, he wasn't sure if he actually caught a glimpse of an air ship or if it was merely a figment of his imagination. His ears twitched, catching various sounds coming from the general direction of the ship. Maybe I'll actually make it out of this. The sound of someone calling out to him reached his ears, and he lifted his head weakly, giving the lone figure he could see on the ship a weak wave of his arm before quickly gripping the flotsam again. The shift in weight had caused his raft of wreckage to tilt too much for his comfort. He tried to call out in reply once he'd settled on the flotsam again, but his voice failed him and left him coughing on salty air. Hopefully the fact he was alive was enough for some kind of a rescue, though at this point he was unsure of who his rescuer would be. | Notes: ok, now let's see if I can start getting the rest of my posts done soon Tags: Gin LarakanWords: 251 |

"Tatsu, fly out there and drop the rope." Gin called up to the bird at the wheel. Tatsu hopped up onto a rail and cried once. "I'll shove you in your cage for the rest of the day." That got his attention, and he hopped off the railing, taking the end of the rope in his talons. The sight of a South Bird, plus his cry, would probably be a bit odd, since they were nowhere near an island that supported South Bird. Hell, it was doubtful that they were near an island at all.
Tatsu let his cry echo over the waves in attempt to get the delirious victim's attention, before he dropped the rope into the water near him. The end of the rope had a buoy on it to allow for easy grabbing. Gin hooked the other end into a small winch she kept on deck mostly for reeling in and spooling out rigging to allow the ship to sail itself, but here it would serve another purpose; saving a life. She just hoped he was conscious enough to grab the rope, because she was in no position to swim out there to save him. Being a power holder kinda sucked sometimes. LAIKA OF THQ

Shaking hands run through my hair My fears, where do I go from here? The sound of the unfamiliar bird served its purpose of getting Nike's attention. It was such a strange sight that he couldn't have missed it or it's cry. Once the avian had dropped the rope, the adrift marine kept his gaze on the buoy. If this was his one chance to be rescued he was not going to pass it up.
As soon as the end of the rope splashed in the water, Nike gathered up the last of his strength and launched off the makeshift raft. Taking a firm hold of the rope, he maneuvered himself to be holding it with the lower end wrapped around one leg as well. It was going to be hard to keep hold with his exhaustion, but he'd either have to hold on or fall back into the rather cold water.
The fact he had a wet mane of hair weighing him down didn't help any, though there really wasn't anything to be done about that; especially not in the current situation.
Once he felt firmly secured on the rope, he gave an exhausted wave over his head, trying to signal whoever was on the ship to get him out of the water. He hoped they'd have a dry bed and a warm meal of some kind; though he had a feeling he'd not be awake long enough to even make it to a bed. Considering how poorly he normally slept when at sea, it was no surprise he was so drained already.

Gin noticed his wave and threw a lever on the winch. With a clattering of gears, the wheel began to turn and pull the rope in. Gin modified the speed so it wouldn't pull it in too quickly. She didn't want him to lose his grip. He looked exhausted. Tatsu returned to his perch upon the rail in front of the wheel, his eyes locked on the new arrival. "He's still off-limits." Tatsu grumbled and half-fluttered-half-walked back to his space in front of the wheel, consulting the Log Pose.
When he got close enough, Gin leaned over. "See if you can fit yourself through the ring, and I'll pull you up." She began thinking of ways to get him up if he couldn't manage that. She could use her Flash Cords, but Gin doubted she had the brawn necessary to hoist a full-grown soaking-wet man onto her ship. She also noticed he had rather long hair, which would make him about twice again as heavy. She just had to hope he was conscious enough to shove himself into the ring. LAIKA OF THQ

Shaking hands run through my hair My fears, where do I go from here? he sound of gears alerted Nike before the rope started to pull him up. He tightened his grip, not wanting to fall as he rose higher. It took a short time before he was pulled up enough to the airship that he'd be able to get on.
"See if you can fit yourself through the ring, and I'll pull you up."
Looking around for a moment, Nike located said ring. Reaching up, he took hold of the metal ring, managing with a bit of difficulty to get himself pulled through. It wasn't all that hard to do, he had a rather slim build compared to humans, though his weight seemed incredibly low for his height. His hair, being wet, managed to slide through the ring without snagging, a small blessing he was thankful for.
His exhaustion was starting to wear on him more though, as he barely managed to get himself through it before his arms buckled from the exertion. From here he could tell the person coordinating the rescue was a woman. Hopefully she had the strength to get him up despite the dead weight of his hair dragging him down. | Notes: short posts, but at least I'm getting them done Tags: Gin LarakanWords: 192 |

The winch clicked, and the ring started moving him upward. She'd mentioned the ring for a reason; it was connected to another winch, this one actually specifically meant for pulling boats and people out of the water. As such, it was a bit beefier than the previous winch. The ring moved up the side of the boat, then inward on a small boom arm so Nike was suspended above the deck. Gin pulled him out and set him on his back on the deck.
"You okay there?" Gin asked, as she began preparing to perform CPR. He seemed like he'd been floating for a little while by now. At her best guess, maybe a day. She was a roboticist, not a medical doctor. Tatsu watched from above. Gin began checking for any open, untreated wounds from the shipwreck he'd obviously been through. She'll figure out more about him later, when he wasn't completely delirious. LAIKA OF THQ

Shaking hands run through my hair My fears, where do I go from here? Having managed to get into the ring, Nike felt and heard another winch click and start pulling him up farther. Once over the deck, the shadetail marine let out a sigh of relief, his ears drooping downward slightly as he closed his eyes. He felt the woman pull him out of the ring once it stopped moving; it was a bit surprising and he opened his eyes back up, exhaustion keeping the lids half closed. She met no resistance from him as he was set on his back, despite the uncomfortable feeling of his knapsack beneath him. The solid deck keeping him up was a great comfort after having been adrift since the attack. As he took a few deep breaths his breathing felt ragged from the effort of holding onto the rope, but he was breathing.
"Fine...thanks," he managed to mutter, his voice hoarse and cracking as he spoke. His throat felt raw from having swallowed some sea water when he'd initially ended up in the water, and the lack of fresh drinking water only made it worse. He could only remember a moment longer of ragged breathing before the darkness of exhaustion fueled unconsciousness overcame him. | Notes: liiiitle bit longer than the last one Tags: Gin LarakanWords: 199 |

Gin began examining his body to make sure he was medically sound, stripping his jacket and knapsack and setting them aside. She noticed the scars spiderwebbing his arms, including a long, rather nasty-looking one down the inside of his forearm. Probably a suicide attempt. Which meant it stood to reason the others were the result of a prolonged habit of self-harm. She looked through his rucksack, finding a Marine uniform. "A Marine... thank god..." Gin was worried for a moment she'd saved a pirate.
She began examining his eyes. Definitely some sort of canid, but these ears were unlike anything she'd ever seen before. They were much too large, and the fur was a bit dark for most wolf or coyote Beastfolk. This warranted further investigation, certainly. She just had to get him down there. She simply tried lifting him, and found him to be shockingly light, for a man of his size. She simply slung him over one shoulder and carried him down into the lab, setting him on the examination table. She removed his boots, and strapped him in. She loved her exam table. The straps secured at the ankles, waist, wrists, elbows, and over the chest. There was another strap that went over the mouth once, but Gin had long since removed it. It was bad at it's intended job. She got her clipboard and began noting certain physical aspects, turning on the spotlight and shining it to see more details. LAIKA OF THQ

Shaking hands run through my hair My fears, where do I go from here? Unsure of how long he'd been unconscious, Nike began to stir slightly, disturbed by a bright light hitting his eyelids. Letting out a small groan, he tried to lift his arm to cover his head, muttering as he pulled against the straps holding his arms down, "Gods, turn that damn light out..." Realizing his arms weren't moving because they were strapped down rather than the muscles being too exhausted to move, he tried to sit up, only to find that more than just his arms were strapped down.
"What the hell?" he sputtered as a surge of panic induced adrenaline pumped into his veins. Nike snapped his eyes open, only to quickly slam them shut again with a short cry of pain. He couldn't move his head enough to keep the bright light from hitting his unshielded eyes. "What the fuck is going on here?!" the demand came out as a half snarl, Nike himself instinctively baring his teeth as he struggled against the straps holding him down. Floating amongst the wreckage of the ship would have been preferable to this kind of treatment. The shadetail was also too preoccupied with being angry at having been restrained to notice his lack of jacket and boots. | Notes: a little bigger than the last. Gin simply continued examining Nike, even as he woke up. "Highly photosensitive eyes... Interesting..." Gin jotted it down on her clipboard. As he was shouting, she noticed something with his teeth. She made a small note to look at it later. "It's obvious you're not an ordinary Beastfolk. Mind sharing?"
She doubted he was actually going to share. Not that it mattered. She'd collect all the data she could, and then go library-delving. A few days of being locked in her library with her biology and taxonomy books ought to net some information of value as to what he was. She just hoped she could get some useful facts out of him before she'd have to gag him. All that racket would have to stop. LAIKA OF THQ

Shaking hands run through my hair My fears, where do I go from here? Still struggling against the bonds, Nike spat out a response to the question about his race, "I don't fucking know. My mother was human and I never knew my father." His voice still held a very clear snarl to it as the lie so easily rolled off his tongue. He'd repeated it over and over so many times through the years he was to the point he'd have to sit down and remind himself it was just a lie. That was the price he had to pay to keep his kind safe, despite the fact he'd only known his family to be the creatures of darkness that Night Hunters feared and loathed so much.
"So what the hell is going on?" Nike's voice was mildly calmer, since it didn't seem he was in any danger of being harmed at the moment. He began to wonder what happened to his effects, especially his wallet. If his wallet went missing he'd throttle someone in a heartbeat. With it containing the only photo that survived the house fire that killed his parents, he was not going to be happen if anything happened to it. In hindsight, he was glad he'd put it in a waterproof bag before sticking it in his knapsack.
The restrained shadetail had the overwhelming urge to keep an eye on the woman who'd strapped him to the table, but the fact the glaringly bright light was still shining kept his eyes shut. It was already going to be hard enough to get the spots out of his vision from the short exposure he'd had.

Gin nodded, jotting down another note. He certainly sounded confident enough; no reason to believe he was lying. Except for the fact that he'd practically screamed it obviously under duress. She circled the note about it and wrote a small question mark next to it. She continued examining, taking down some notes on the scars on his arms. "I should introduce myself. My name is Gin Larakan, and I am the Vegapunk. I'm studying you, because you're no normal Beastfolk." That should sufficiently answer the question he'd posed.
At least he'd calmed down significantly. This worked well for her. She didn't have to use her big scary needle to pump him full of sedative. She liked the subjects awake; it gave her more to work with. She walked away for a moment, returning with a small dental device. "Just don't fight back, and you'll be out in no time." She used it to prop Nike's mouth open, taking down notes about his unusual canine teeth. She also noticed a tongue ring, making only a cursory note of it before continuing to examine. LAIKA OF THQ
