366 "A sailer whent to sea sea sea to see what she could see see see!" Yumi yawned tiredly as she walked off the gangplank of her ship once more. For the past few days her crew had been docked here while they gathered supplies, and to save money, they'd agreed to all sleep in the ships hammocks. She didn't of course, she had the captain's quarters, all kitted out with a nice bed. She was trying to hide it as long as she could. If shura or Sela found out about it, they'd end up either taking it or planning out a schedule to take turns sleeping in it.
Right now though was the last day they agreed to stay before setting sail again. Maybe they'd come back if they figured they hadn't stocked up enough, but they'd also try and make some money on the open seas, just a little extra to make sure they could make it somewhere new before they set out. Taking in what may have been her last view of the place in the morning, Yumi set off down to town, glancing side to side at the stores and tavern, wondering if there was a nice way to spend her last day...
.....
As the day drew on, Yumi had ended up hunting a few extra birds and grabbing a map for Sela of an interesting place to try and visit someday. She thought about getting back to the ship, but a rumbling in her tummy gave her a different idea...they had a bit of coin left, why not get something to eat in town rather than waist the supplies they built up...Smiling at her self justification, she slipped inside the nearest resteraunt she could find, slipping into a seat and waiting to be served. Sooner rather than later, a nice man came over with a menu, handing it to Yum as she quickly scanned it with hungry eyes.
"Can I get you anything while you-"
"Steak!~" She smiled, handing back the menu with a huge grin, much to the man's amusement. WIth a quiet chuckle he shook his head, going back to the kitchen. CODED BY SYLVIE

If one was to ever walk into a restaurant, they would immediately know that the kitchen was the best place to be in the food industry... so long as it wasn’t the lunch rush at least, but even that was fun. The kitchen was Markus’ world; the pots were cradles, the utensils mere extensions of his arms, and the stove, of course, was just how his heart’s fire was able to touch the food. Best part was today was a slow day, and with the less-horrific customer intake, he was the only one needed in the kitchen.
“Hey, guy, we got a new order!”
Not currently making anything, and spending the current moments tapping his fingers on a clean dishcloth, the black-haired young man looked up through the window, grabbing the paper. “...Steak.” Markus sighed; he knew that their new employee was inexperienced in the field, but he figured that he would have asked for how well the steak was to be cooked; that was practically cooking 101.
Markus relented slightly, remembering how long it took him to learn that steaks could be cooked different ways, but he could have at least asked for what steak dish she wanted. After taking a moment to take in the minor lapse of judgment on both the waiter’s and customer’s side, he shook his head and smiled warmly, muttering to himself, “Guess I’ll just play it safe.”
First thing he did was grab a potato off a bowl on the counter. They were pre-cooked, so it was just a matter of putting them in the oven to be reheated. The steak was a bit more difficult; it was the only part of the dish that was to be made fresh, but still he gently put it into the pan and let it begin cooking, looking down into the oven to check on the potato before grabbing some steamed broccoli with a large spoon, heating them up quickly and putting them on the plate, drizzling a hot cheese sauce over them, checking on the steak again and flipping it, watching it and the potato until they were both good; the potato was the first to be put on the plate of the two, cut open slightly to release some of the heat, and then the medium-well steak joined the two sides.
For a moment, a somewhat silly thought crossed his mind as he looked at the plate; he was a little regretful that the steak wasn’t going to compare to a steakhouse’s plate in a hundred years, but he was hoping that that little bit of extra juiciness he managed to pull out of the steak would be enough to make up for it. He set the plate on the counter and rang the bell twice, waiting for the new employee to come before giving him a supportive look, asking calmly, “Next time, try to ask what steak dish they want; we don’t have a lot, but it would help if I knew, and also, make sure you always ask how they want their steak cooked; a cook can go wrong very easily without that.”
With that, Markus turned back to the kitchen. I'LL DO MY BEST, BUT I'M JUST THE COOK. CODED BY SYLVIE

422 "A sailer whent to sea sea sea to see what she could see see see!" Now Yumi wasn't the most annoying type of person, she was pleasant, tried to get along with whoever she could. Even as she took up piracy she tried to disarm more people than actually kill them. What did make her irritating though was how she acted when she was hungry. In the middle of the rather pleasent resteraunt, her heavy footed boot was tapping rapidly against the wooden floor, a fork twiddling back and forth between her finger and thumb. She must have been a real nuisance to the rest of the resteraunt goers.
But as soon as the food arrived, she was silent, a giddy smile on her face as she eagerly awaited the meal that was being placed infront of her by the man she had simply said "Steak" to. He looked down with a nervous smile. "I hope it pleases you, you did not give many specifics afterall."
Yumi wasn't fussy, she'd eat anything that wasn't cooked by her crew at this point. "It'll be fine, trust me. Thanks again.~" She smiled, handing over the coin while she could, knowing she'd likely have to bail and head back to the crew so they didn't suspect anything. This was the only time she was gonna get a good meal for a long while and she was gonna enjoy it. Cutting off a single chunk of the steak, she blew it with a cooling breath whether it needed it or not, and finally, placed it down on her tongue.
"Mmmmm~" Her whole body shuddered for a moment as she just took in the taste, the rich juciness of the steak seeming to just ooze over her tongue and make her melt. Maybe it was because she hadn't eaten something so good in so long but by god was this good! Before long the steak was gone and she was onto the potato, cutting it up into nice pieces and enjoying the fresh taste of a well cooked potato. Finally, her eyes came to the brocoli, a part of the meal she never tended to enjoy, but with the tangy cheese sauce coating a majority of the greens, even that could not go uneaten. By the end there was a very happy red head, patting her tummy as the waiter walked past, lazily grabbing for his sleeve.
"Hey, you. You HAVE to give my compliments to the chef! This stuff is great!" CODED BY SYLVIE

“Hey, kiddo!”
A strong, masculine, yet lighthearted voice peeked out from a door, a nice grin on the face of an older, very fit gentleman, getting the attention of Markus.
“I’m thinking about closing early,” he said, “I have to work on the house anyway and get that leaky roof fixed. What do you think?” Markus smiled, nodding in agreement as he replied, “Sure, why not, Dad? It’s slow anyway, and I just finished the last order so far.” A confirming thumbs up from his father, and Markus quickly shed the apron that consisted of his work uniform, snagging a book he had been reading off the counter and bursting out of the kitchen.
A warm smile on his face, Markus waved to the woman behind the register, “I’m heading out, Mom! See ya!”
“Heading to the docks again, sweetie?”
Markus chuckled in replied, “Yeah, gonna try to finish this book!” With that, Markus turned around and ran out the front door, smiling at the fresh air before disappearing. The waiter, meanwhile, blinked, watching Markus leave, confused. “Ah, well... that’s the cook there. You just missed him.” I'LL DO MY BEST, BUT I'M JUST THE COOK. CODED BY SYLVIE

313 "A sailer whent to sea sea sea to see what she could see see see!" Yumi's eyes followed the man her waiter had pointed out as the cook. She didn't think it would be right to stop him when he was leaving, afterall "compliments to the chef" was usually just something you said to a waiter after an amazing meal...still, she felt this meal deserved a little congratulations to it's maker. She enjoyed every last juicy strand of meat, and it was the first time in her life she hadn't gagged on brocoli. She had vaguely caught something about him heading to the docks, so she decided once her food had settled, she'd make her way towards her ship and thank him along the way.
"Well, you got your coin, I got me meal..." With a final pat of her sated stomach, the red head pulled herself up from her seat. "I think we're all done here." Flipping a coin from her pocket at the waiter Yumi left with a pleasant smile practically glued to her face, moving on towards the docks, keeping an eye out for the cook she had seen leave the restaurant earlier. He seemed easy enough to spot, afterall the docks weren't a particularly busy place at such a small island. She made sure to try and introduce herself, waving to get her attention as she walked over.
"Hey, You're the cook from that restaurant down the street right? You're server pointed you out as you left, I thought I'd just say thanks for the meal!~ Never tasted anything that good in my life!~" Now standing before the cook she rested her arms behind her back, shoulders tucked in with a pleasant, yet nervous smile. She didn't imagine it was normal to seek out a chef to make sure you could thank them. CODED BY SYLVIE

Markus made good time to the docks; he knew this place the back of his hand, and he visited the docks nearly every day. He took in a deep breath of the sea as soon as it hit his nostrils, letting out a yearning sigh. Ahhh... the salty air, filled with the faint scent of fresh fish and the cries of seagulls and even the occasional bell... it really was a great place to be. The golden-eyed boy found his favorite place to sit quickly, sitting over the edge of one of the docks with his feet teasing the water, and with the rush of the waves caressing his ears, he opened his book, eyes getting a little brighter as his mind continued where the book left off... The sea was my mistress, and, for the most part, she was kind to me; she gifted me plenty with beneficial winds, many fish to feast upon, and kept the sun bright and beautiful to see the glittering waters....
...this night, my mistress was angry. She churned violently in her fury, throwing blackened water onto the deck to join with the stinging rain. Winds pounded on me and my crew from all directions, threatening to throw us all into the depths if so much as a single sliver of weakness showed on our bodies. If my mistress wanted me dead, she would have to throw up more of a fight than this!
I kicked down the door from my quarters, throwing it off its hinges, letting it be taken by the winds to who knows where and began commanding my crew. If I was to survive the storm, so were they. Even with the night giving darkness beyond ten feet of my eyes, even with the winds throwing painful rain onto our bodies, and even with the mistress herself trying to capsize my beloved Hammer’s Breath, we managed to hold our own.
Then, bright, painted light from the sky came down with a roar. And as the lighting struck my quarters.... "Hey, You're the cook from that restaurant down the street right?” A record might as well have skipped as Markus was thrown back into reality. His smile, which had been becoming a bigger and bigger grin as he read on, disappeared to a look of disappointment. That look, however, disappeared as he looked behind him. The vision he had in his mind before was of fury and heroism, but the vision before his eyes now was one of gentleness of beauty. His cheeks turned a light shade of red as he stared at her, unable to stop his eyes from rolling over her perfect curves. All the up from her feet to her head, she looked like the perfect description of beauty. Worse yet, she seemed to dress so that she showed it off... he could see some of her bra. “I thought I'd just say thanks for the meal!~ Never tasted anything that good in my life!~" Somehow, over his own pounding heart, Markus managed to hear her compliment, shyly rubbing the back of his head, closing his eyes as he tried to smile warmly in return, though it was much more nervous than warm. “N-No problem, ma’am,” he stuttered, “Glad you liked it.” It was sort of odd that she followed him just to thank him, but he wasn’t really complaining. The compliment itself was really, really nice; he deeply and truly appreciated it; after all, knowing that someone enjoyed his meal is exactly why he got into cooking in the first place. It was just a bonus that this very, very, very pretty girl went out of her way to approach him. I'LL DO MY BEST, BUT I'M JUST THE COOK. CODED BY SYLVIE

251 "A sailer whent to sea sea sea to see what she could see see see!" Yumi smiled nervously when she noticed she seemed to be interupting the boy from his book. He seemed pretty into it to, tilting her head she tried to catch a glimpse of the books title, completely missing the fact that the cook she had come to thank was gazing over her body, even if only for a moment before bringing her back to attention as he spoke. She was glad her thanks was well appreciated and her smile only grew, bouncing cheerfully on her heals.
"Well it really was a great meal, I mean seriously, I don't think I've ever eaten something that good!" Even now she seemed to be drooling just a little at the memory of it, not even realizing she was still talking as she spoke from her head, clasping her hands together as if in the most wonderful daydream. "Oh just the thought of it makes me want more...." She chuckled, snapping back to her senses as if she said nothing, and continuing on with a jokey tone to her voice, as if what she said next shouldn't be taken seriously, but a small part of her shined though that it was a small hope of hers.
"Heck no chance you're looking to be a sea cook are ya? My crew would die for a guy like you making us food like THAT!~"

This woman was interesting, to say the least; kind of reminded Markus of his friend. He smiled warmly, supportively as she seemed to start daydreaming, about a meal no less. A thought of her possibly being related to Felicia crossed his mind, but he threw that away. There wasn’t much of a resemblance aside from the energy and maybe the dreaminess. While she went on, he folded down the edge of his page and closed his book like so many times before, waiting until she was done, all while trying not to look directly at her. He didn’t want to stare.
"Heck no chance you're looking to be a sea cook are ya? My crew would die for a guy like you making us food like THAT!~"
Markus blinked, suddenly looking at the girl, not even noticing her jovial tune. “Huh? Sea cook? Like, a cook for a crew?” Markus didn’t know how to replace to that easily. One the one hand, he was really flattered; he got the occasional compliment from customers, and of course, Felicia never was one to hold back her thoughts on his food. To be actually chased down just to be told his food was good AND get a job offer to go out to sea? To him, it was shocking.
“U-Uh, well... umm,” Markus stuttered, trying to at least control his nervousness to talk as he rubbed the back of his head, “I’ve never really left town before, but...”
The young man turned to the water, giving his back to the redhead as he stared out to the glittering waves. “I’ve always kind of wanted to go out to sea... so yeah, I guess you could say I’d be interested.” I'LL DO MY BEST, BUT I'M JUST THE COOK. CODED BY SYLVIE

LET'S ROCK! COME ON, COME ON, LET'S GO! 609 "I'm going out to eat, Dad - don't burn the house down!" the girl yelled out as she ran out, a wide smile on her face. She was sure her father would answer with something along the lines of "no promises!", but she wasn't worried.
The day couldn't have been more perfect for a run! The girl jumped and dashed down the city, waving in greeting to many people, but not stopping in her excitement. A wild grin was on her face as she ran, her red eyes alight with what could be best descrived as fun. The sun was on her back, her weapons with her, the wind was whipping at her hair and making her scarf flow behind her like the tail feather of some great, mythical bird. The spear on her back glinted in the sunlight, a work of art on a tool of battle. Her breaths were short, quick, much like her movements, as she lounged from area to area, her legs carrying her over the city. She passed by the hospital, waving hello to the receptionist.
Today had been a hard day at the hospital - three "pirates" had come in with severe cases of different wounds. Most doctors ended up exhausted, but the girl simply kept giving care until they were all patched up. And honestly, though these men called themselves pirates, they were simply sailors who flew a Jolly Roger. She thought of them as adventurers, as happy seafarers who had the wind at their back and the sun over them. They weren't the ruthless murderers the older folks whispered about, or the men that her father had told her to watch out for. And, in truth, she envied these "pirates." Would that she could go and sail the seas and explore - but she couldn't leave Markus behind. Her father would be fine, he could take care of himself, but Markus? That kid wouldn't go outside if she didn't force him otherwise.
She soon arrived at her destination - the Hartwin Restaurant and house. Her plan was to have a nice meal, and then drag Marcus to the training field so they could have their daily spar. Yet, to her surprise, she had gotten there late - he had already escaped to the docks.
"I'll go see him at the docks then, Auntie Hartwin! Say hello to Uncle for me!" She exclaimed vividly as she dashed off, Markus's mother simply smiling softly and waving her off. With more jumping and dashing, she made her way to the docks. The smell of sea breeze filled her nostrils and the cawing of seagulls was carried by the wind. She could appreciate Markus's taste in location. She loved this place too, almost as she loved the forge. It took very little search to find Markus - he was in his usual spot, but there was a girl with him! Markus, with a stranger? Wowewowow!
As she ran towards them, full-speed, she waved and yelled "OIIII! MARKUS! FOUND YA!" She sprinted now, dashing at a wild pace and skittering to a stop just in front of the other two. The other girl... She was different. Red hair, too - Felicia had never met this girl before. But she looked cool - perhaps she was an adventurer!
"You didn't think you'd get out of practice so easily, did ya, Markus?" She commented at her friend with a smile, elbowing him playfully and softly in the ribs, before turning to the other girl. "Hiya! My name is Felicia - I can see you've met my best bud Markus here! Pleasure to meetcha, whateveryournameis!"

000 "A sailer whent to sea sea sea to see what she could see see see!" Yumi had a small smile creep onto her lips as she spotted that the guy was considering to be a very little jokey jab at the good cook. Wow, if she could seriously convince him to come aboard her crew would hail her as a hero for getting him to come along. It would be fantastic! All that good, lovely, juicy, delicious steak night in and night out, maybe even something different and new somedays!
It was when the other girl came along that things got a little awkward for her. Not only had her joke been taken seriously, much to her benefit mind, but a friend of the cooks had come along just as he seemed to have decided to come aboard. Yumi backed away, admittadly a tad awkwardly as she felt she was now the person intruding on the conversation rather than the pink haired girl herself.
"Er...Yumi." She offered her hand out to shake Felicia's. "Yumi Tasukai. Captain of the broken chopstick pir-er...crew. The broken chopsticks crew." Luckily her slip up was so brief it would hardly be noticed. People of a quiet village like this may not react well to pirates. She glanced back to Markus. Markus smiled softly as he considered what it would be like if he accepted this girl’s offer. He would get to see this beautiful glittering sea for as far as his eyes could see every day. The sting of the ocean spray would greet him every morning... the salty sea air would be his breath every day. More than that... the places that could be seen out there! The people! The world had so many mysteries... what sort of strange lands were out there? What sort of people? How different were things out there compared to things around here?
“OIIII!”
The raven-haired boy winced purely out of instinct as he heard that voice, that easily recognizable call that he had heard hundreds on hundreds of times already. He didn’t even have to look back; he could see her run towards him excitedly, practically kicking up a dust trail behind her and skidding to a stop. "You didn't think you'd get out of practice so easily,” his old friend said, “did ya, Markus?"
He only rubbed the back of his head in response. Luckily, he didn’t have to respond immediately; true as Fel could be, she immediately directed her endless energy to the most interesting or newest thing in the area, which, in this case, happened to be the redhead. He sheepishly rubbed the back of his head, turning to the girls as they got introductions out of the way. “Sorry, Fel,” he finally replied to her, “I forgot that you were coming over. Dad said we were closing early so I came out here.”
He looked at Yumi, giving her a sheepish smile as he continued, “Miss Tasukai was offering me to be a cook on her crew. And... well... I’d have to tell Mom and Dad about it... but I think I was accepting.” I'LL DO MY BEST, BUT I'M JUST THE COOK. CODED BY SYLVIE

LET'S ROCK! COME ON, COME ON, LET'S GO! 706 "Pleasure to meetcha, Captain Yumi - I agree, his food is amazing, isn't it? Especially the steak, but I also love the potatoes and the pasta and the bananas~." Replied Felicia, shaking the captain's offered hand as a dreamy smile and remembering look covered her face when she mentioned the divine banana pudding and banana cream pie and bananas that the Hartwins served.
But wowewowow! A captain of a crew! That meant that she was an adventurer, a sailor, a master of ship and sea! Felicia knew that many crews stopped by the small island to restock and prepare to go off into more difficult seas, but she'd never met a captain before (that is, outside the hospital). The medic wondered, for a second, how much experience this girl had - if she was a swashbuckling swordswoman, or a gunslinger of unrivaled skill. Maybe she could navigate through the toughest sea storms, or duke it out with other ships and smash her enemies with cannons! ...Maybe she was a pirate! She certainly didn't seem like one of the bad pirates Felicia's father always talked about, though - she couldn't be much older than Felicia.
There was an air about this Captain Yumi, though - something that interested Felicia. She seemed... well, fun, to be honest. She embodied everything the "pirates" that she so envied were: free, adventuring, carefree, with nothing but their own compasses to guide them. Sparring when they felt like, sleeping when they felt like, doing as they wished. Felicia didn't assume she was a pirate, but the concept of a captain of a sailor crew piqued her interest. If only Markus wasn't staying behind, she would totally ask to be taken on adventure, even if it was a simple there and return trip, or a complete joining of the crew. Her father always said "to take chances when they show." But even Felicia knew responsibility - the hospital would be fine without her, and her father would love for her daughter to become an adventurer (as long as she came back), but Markus? It's not so much that the cook needed Felicia, but that Felicia couldn't leave him behind. Especially since she knew so well that, meek as he might be, the kid wanted adventure almost as much as she did.
But then Markus said that which changed everything. “Miss Tasukai was offering me to be a cook on her crew. And... well... I’d have to tell Mom and Dad about it... but I think I was accepting.”
Had Felicia been drinking something, she would have had a spit take. "Wooooooooah! WHAT? Really? Like, really real really?" She exclaimed, completely taken aback. She looked at Markus for a sign of a joke, but there was only honesty in his voice. For once in a long time, Felicia was left speechless for a second, the surprise running over her. This lady... She had offered to give Markus adventure? And he was going to say yes?! Without Felicia pushing him on? Maybe Markus had gotten a little braver over the years.
But Felicia knew better. She couldn't leave him alone. This was her chance - she could kill two birds with one stone!
A wide smile painted her face again, one hand at her hip and the other one mock saluting Yumi. "Captain Yumi, request to join this cook in your crew! While he's a strong fighter even though I'm better, a great cook, and a sweet kid, he's my best friend, and anywhere he goes, I go!" Dropping her hand, she giggled slightly before smiling with excitement in her eyes, turning to face Markus.
"Can you imagine, Markus? A crew! The sea! Sea breeze and sun on our backs, adventure and work! This is what we were waiting for! Oooh, I wonder if Daddy will give me that gift he'd been promising me for a while now... And I'll help you convince Auntie and Uncle!" She babbled slightly, almost bouncing off the dock in excitement. Her sword and spear, each holstered in their respective places, tinkled in her excitement. Well this was a turn of events. Yumi was just about to get a cook when a new crew member seemed to be offering herself up, far more eager and excited to be a par of the bigger picture, though Yumi was unsure...the crew was struggling for money as it is, and while Markus could cook what little food they had, spreading it thinner for just another head on deck didn't seem like it was worth the trade off. Yumi hated herself for even thinking like this, but in the end it was true.
"I dunno kid...I just..." She sighed, hanging her hand in her hand with her other resting on her hip, drumming her index finger against her forehead. She had to think how to say this without it sounding like a no.
"The truth is...I'm worried about taking even Markus on board." She turned to the cook. "Don't get me wrong, we'd REALLY value your talents, but the thing is, we're a small crew, and we're struggling as it is. The two of you sound like you've never been on a ship before, and while the same was true for me a few months back I know enough to know you shouldn't take someone aboard if they can't offer something..."
With a final sigh she just hoped she wasn't sounding too harsh, looking up at the girl with a hopeful smile. "So...kid...Shoot me with your best offer." CODED BY SYLVIE

He expected such a strong reaction from Fel. She always had a weird energy about her; there have been many times already she managed to make him feel tired just by being around him.
Markus’ blush deepened a little when Fel praised his steak. Honestly, wasn’t that a little much? It was a pretty low-grade steak... he did the best he could with it but it would never compare to a steakhouse steak. He was flattered, but he’d rather have real, quality steak to work with, even if it wasn’t as cheap. Well... at least it was nice to know that people enjoyed his food. That was always a great feeling, even if he knew he could get them better food if he had the means.
"Can you imagine, Markus? A crew! The sea! Sea breeze and sun on our backs, adventure and work! This is what we were waiting for! Oooh, I wonder if Daddy will give me that gift he'd been promising me for a while now... And I'll help you convince Auntie and Uncle!"
She was talking a bit faster now, beginning to be hard to understand, but he had plenty of practice with her fast talking, so she was still easy to understand, at least to him. He nodded in response, smiling, “Yeah, won’t it be great?”
"I dunno kid...I just..."
Markus blinked and turned to Yumi worriedly as she quite obviously struggled to figure out how to say something nicely. "The truth is...I'm worried about taking even Markus on board. Don't get me wrong, we'd REALLY value your talents,” she said, aiming that particular part at him, “but the thing is, we're a small crew, and we're struggling as it is. The two of you sound like you've never been on a ship before, and while the same was true for me a few months back I know enough to know you shouldn't take someone aboard if they can't offer something... So...kid...Shoot me with your best offer."
The cook could just smile, crossing his arms and watching both Fel and Yumi, just waiting for Fel to impress Yumi. It was never really hard for her to impress anyone, for better or worse. In this case, better. I'LL DO MY BEST, BUT I'M JUST THE COOK. CODED BY SYLVIE
